Work Schedule Type:
On-site (The internship will be performed entirely at the lab)
Student Requirements:
Students must be U.S. citizens. (Permanent residents are not eligible.) Students must also have their own transportation to the site.
Mission
To provide research, development, testing and evaluation and in-service engineering to deliver specialized facility and expeditionary solutions to the warfighter.
About the Lab
The Naval Facilities Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center (NAVFAC EXWC) was established in 2012. We are a command of more than 1,300 dedicated men and women who are experts in facilities engineering, technology solutions, and life-cycle management of expeditionary equipment for the Navy, Marine Corps, federal agencies, and other Department of Defense supported commands. On Dec. 12, 2017, NAVFAC EXWC was authorized as the DOD’s newest Science and Technology Reinvention Laboratory.
About the Internship
We are looking for motivated students with an interest in expanding their knowledge and developing their hands-on experience in STEM. NAVFAC EXWC offers a wealth of opportunities in areas such as environmental science, ocean and seafloor engineering, facilities engineering, energy science and engineering, and information security.

What kinds of projects do interns at this lab participate in?
The following are examples of projects to which interns may be assigned:
The Capital Improvements (CI) Department is key to successfully managing Navy and Marine Corps installations. The goal is to reduce facility ownership costs by standardizing technical practices, solutions, materials and processes to support the entire lifecycle of facilities while still meeting and maintaining operational and readiness requirements. NAVFAC facilitates a vast array of specialized services for which subject matter experts enable the best science, technology, engineering and architectural concepts to improve design, construction and facilities management of the NAVFAC organization. The CI areas of focus include chemistry, structural and geotechnical civil engineering, materials science and engineering, and mechanical engineering.
The Environmental Security (EV) Department is the Department of Defense’s leading environmental center and strives to make significant contributions in environmental quality and environmental restoration to the U.S. Navy for their ashore operations. EV provides environmental products and services to support environmental compliance, restoration, pollution prevention, sustainability and climate change. EV areas of focus include microbiology, chemical engineering, chemistry, civil engineering, computer and computational sciences and computer engineering, environmental sciences and Engineering, geosciences (hydrology and hydrogeology), information sciences, and mechanical engineering.
The Expeditionary Programs Office (ExPO) supports the U.S. Navy by developing, delivering and sustaining affordable, lethal combat capability. ExPO supports the fleet in all efforts relating to documenting capability requirements, keeping abreast of enabling technologies, developing sustainable materiel solutions to address capability gaps, developing acquisition plans to close gaps -- all while delivering total life-cycle systems management. ExPO’s areas of focus include chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer and computational sciences, computer engineering, electrical engineering, environmental sciences, industrial and systems engineering, mathematics, mechanical engineering, naval architecture, and ocean engineering.
The Public Works (PW) Department is the U.S. Navy’s center for specialized energy and utilities engineering and technology, designed to save energy and reduce overall utility costs. PW partners with government agencies to leverage the best technologies and business practices in support of naval facilities, naval installations and other supported commands within the Department of Defense. PW areas of focus include aeronautical and astronautical engineering (particularly related to unmanned aerial vehicles), computer and computational sciences and computer engineering, electrical engineering, environmental sciences, information sciences, mathematics, mechanical engineering, and operations research.
The Oceans Facilities (CIOFP) Department is the Department of Defense’s leading provider of seafloor engineering, moorings, shore-based hyperbaric facilities and underwater cable facilities. CIOFP is the sole provider of science, technology, and specialized engineering in pier and wharf condition assessment, marine offshore structures, seafloor surveys and ocean construction. Additionally, CIOFP supports the fleet and other sponsors within various Department of Defense commands. CIOFP areas of focus include Civil Engineering—Geotechnical Engineers, Electrical Engineering—Electronics Engineers (Unmanned Underwater Vehicles, Remotely Operated Vehicles, et cetera), and Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering—Ocean Engineers (Modeling & Numerical Analysis).
